The trailer was interesting... special effects were out of this world... his (jump) abilities were damn cool... something that I guess a lot of people would want to have... cos if I REALLY have his 'power', I would jump right out the the box-office and demand my money back! Cos the movie SUCKED BIG TIME!!

In short, a genetic abnormality allows a young man to teleport himself anywhere. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between 'Jumpers' and 'Paladins' who have sworn to kill them. To his amazement the Paladins have shock nets and whips to tie down Jumpers so they cannot Jump.

The movie did not explain a lot of things. why was he abandoned at 5? how is he related to Griffin (another jumper)? did the dad die? did samuel l. jackson get out of the grand canyon eventually? who are the paladin and why do they want to kill jumpers?

With so many unanswered questions, the whole movie became a over-hyped travelogue instead... so if you're into travelogues, you might find it interesting... but then again, nothing compared to National Geographics.

I want my money back!

P.S. There was a man watching the movie last night... i think he got too excited after the credits rolled, and did a jump (over the rows of cinema seats)... but then, he tripped on the arm rest, broke it and almost fell down...

Set in Singapore in the mid-Sixties, Beauty World is a musical melodrama about the adventures of Ivy Chan Poh Choo, a small town girl in the big city.

A mysterious jade pendant brings her from her hometown in Batu Pahat to Beauty World, a fabulous if somewhat seamy 1960s Singapore nightclub, where she hopes to locate her long lost-father.

In her adventures, she meets up with her dotty pen-pal, gets a extreme make-over for her stage debut, crosses the path of the cabaret’s vindictive star, and learns some heartbreaking truths about love and life.

The last production of Beauty World I watched was the one on TV for the President Star Charity. I thought Sharon Au was a hard act to follow... and the new cast was practically unknown... BUT was I wrong!! The performance was flawless!! The leads in the new production was absolutely fantastic. Irene "Mrs PCK" Ang was hilarious as Wan Choo....

This has got to be one of the best local musical I was seen. If the tickets weren't so damn expensive, i'll probably catch it one more time...

Genre: Horror
A first ever Singapore-New Zealand film collaboration focuses on a thrilling tale of tattoos and tribesmen in The Tattooist, where the supernatural and the spiritual take over from the ordinary life and tattoos take on a frightening new dimension.

American tattoo artist Jake Sawyer explores and exploits ethnic designs from around the world. At a tattoo expo in Singapore (was there ever one??), he glimpses the exotic world of traditional Samoan tatau in the work of the fiercely proud Alipati and falls in love with Alipati’s attractive cousin, Sina.

A pervasive, angry spirit is unleashed when Jake steals an ancient Samoan tattooing tool, and Jake’s art takes a dangerous turn as everyone he touches faces mortal peril.

Hoping to put an end to this curse, Jake follows the Samoans to Auckland, where he meets an old adversary, tattoo artist Crash and a new one, the respected Samoan elder Aleki Va’a. His investigation takes him on a devastating journey into the dark side of Pacific mysticism. However, Jake has to get through this in order to recover his own soul, save the woman he loves and escape with his life.

It started off like a travelogue for Singapore, and i managed to spot only 2 Singaporean actors in it... other than that, it is nothing scary about the show... watching 881 is more scary than this!! A letdown for a horror-fan like me.

*Zzzzzzz*

The last Cirque du Soleil production I watched was "Alegria" when they came to Singapore a couple of years ago, and at that time, I thought it was just a hyped-up overpriced circus show. So when my friends recommended that I MUST catch KÀ" while I was in Las Vegas, I was quite skeptical. In the end, I was BLOWN AWAY!!!!

"KÀ" is a saga that follows the adventures of two Imperial Twins (a male and a female) who become separated during a siege of their Far Eastern palace by evil warriors.

Except for an opening comment by an announcer setting up the story, there is no dialogue in the 90-minute production. And so they rely on action to tell their story, creating Cirque du Soleil's first action-adventure show to rival any Hollywood blockbuster.

The $165 million spent on the theater and the show was money well spent. It is an experience you will remember for a long time, almost as if you were part of a multi-million-dollar motion picture.

Technology is the star of "KÀ" -- a floating stage that appears and disappears, becoming at different times a mountain, a beach, a palace or a battleground; the wheel of death; a delightful cast of puppets (actually humans in suits that turn them into crabs, turtles, snakes and other creatures).

There are many memorable technological moments in the production: an underwater scene; a battle that takes place on a vertical field yet gives us the illusion that we have a bird's-eye view of the conflict; spectacular fireworks.

And of course the acrobats. What's a Cirque show without acrobats? The cast of "KÀ" performs some of the most spectacular stunts of all the Cirque productions.

But for all of KÀ's technological marvels some of its greatest moments are the quiet ones -- Shadow puppets created by human hands and campfire light, a romance between the imperial prince and the daughter of one his captors.

If not for the pricey ticket, I would catch it again! It's THAT good.

and here's ONE more star "" to make this one of THE BEST movies I have watched so far this year!

Hairspray is a remake of an old film from 1988 (which was equally as wonderful!), which had inspired a broadway musical to be made from it (the 1988 one).

Set in 1962 Baltimore, the film follows a "pleasantly-plump" teen named Tracy Turnblad as she simultaneously pursues stardom as a dancer on a local TV show and rallies against racial segregation. It's a simple storyline... but it's the stellar cast and EXCELLENT soundtrack that took my breath away the minute the show started!

Hairspray stars John Travolta (he's cross-dressing in this movie), Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron (swoon!), Elijah Kelley, Allison Janney, and introduces newcomer Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad.

It's kinda funny to see John Travolta dance in a huge fat bodysuit... but I think he did a wonderful job playing the "mother" to the equally brilliant Nikki. Needless to say, Michelle Pfieffer was sensational as the 'villianess' in the movie... I have always admired her action skills... and also HOW THE HELL did she manage to not looked old and wrinkled? SK-II?

This is one movie that's not to be missed. Definitely worth more than a five star rating for me!... but then again, that's ME.... cos i'm a sucker for musicals!

Category:Movies
Genre: Animation
Ratatouille is the latest animated offering from Disney/Pixar. It's about a rat (Rémy) who longs to follow in the footsteps of his hero, the late Chef Auguste Gusteau — at one time considered to be the greatest chef in Paris. After discovering an unusual way through which he can control the actions of the hapless Linguini, who was working as a garbage boy in the kitchen of Gusteau's restaurant at the time, he is given the ultimate opportunity to show the world what he can do.

There hadn't been an animated feature that has gotten my attention since Finding Nemo... and I had to see what the hype was about Ratatouille. The storyline is simple and straightforward. But kudos to the the filmmakers at Pixar for raising the bar this time round. The food looks delectable, the backgrounds vibrant and the characters — human and rats — well defined.

Ratatouille is not a kids’ film. It is a feature the entire family can enjoy. In fact, adults may get a bigger charge than the youngsters.

In a sense, Ratatouille is a story about fulfilling one’s dreams, about going beyond preconceived boundaries and following your heart.

The movie is loads of fun, even at nearly two hours. The time flies and the laughs are constant. This is a feature for which you may want to go back for seconds.

Here's a quote from the movie that really stayed on my mind : "In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgement. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talents — new creations. The new needs friends."

ReviewReviewReviewDisturbia [DVD]Aug 9, '07 9:53 PM

Category:Movies
Genre: Mystery & Suspense
It was National Day + I was recovering from flu... so i stayed home and watched "Disturbia" on DVD (yeah... the show just opened at the cinemas, but i managed to get my hands on the DVD!)

"Disturbia" stars Shia LaBeouf (last seen in Transformer) as Kale, a high school student placed under house arrest for the summer.

One year after getting into a car accident that kills his father, Kale snaps at the end of the school year, punches a teacher and is sentenced to three months of house arrest. When his mother, played by Carrie-Anne Moss (who played Trinity in The Matrix), cuts off the power plug to his television for not cleaning his room, discontinued his iTunes and xBox Live subcription, Kale is left with nothing to do. To fend off boredom, Kale starts spying on his neighbors. This includes the new girl next door, played by Sarah Roemer, named is Ashley. Kale quickly determines that when Ashley goes for her daily swim and discovers that she always leaves the blinds to her room open.

Throughout the first third of the movie the audience is left guessing if she likes him and if she knows Kale is watching her. When Ashley eventually comes over to Kale's house and sees his stalker setup, Kale claims it is for spying on their quiet neighbor. Apparently this neighbor is the secretive killer Mr. Turner. Most of the rest of the movie consists of alternating back and forth as to whether or not Mr. Turner is a serial killer. The transitions between the man's guilt and innocence are frequent and convincing. Disturbia's greatest strength is the several guessing games it plays one after another throughout the movie.

Overall Disturbia is fairly good but the ending needs help. It is a bit of a disappointment because after the final revelation, there are no real scares. Everything is either extremely predictable or revealed slowly without even attempting to surprise the viewer.

While Disturbia seems like just another horror movie that has been restrained into a PG-13 rating, it doesn't rely on the standard gore and violence of horror. Instead it keeps the true nature of the facts ambiguous and the audience unsure of what is really happening.

For someone who is high on Amoxicillin and Paracentamol (me!) and doesn't really need much brain juice to sit through a movie, it's a good watch...

ReviewReviewReviewReviewReviewTransformersJun 29, '07 8:06 PM

Category:Movies
Genre: Action & Adventure
If it's true that there's an 8-year-old boy inside every man, "Transformers" is just the ticket to bring the kid out. Big, loud and full of testosterone-fueled car fantasies, Michael Bay's actioner hits a new peak for CGI work, showcasing spectacular chases and animated transformation sequences seamlessly blended into live-action surroundings. There's no longer any question whether special effects can be made more realistic: The issue is whether disposable actors can be trained to play better with bluescreens.

The film wastes no time jumping right into the action. After a brief narration by Optimus Prime explaining the war on Cybertron and the mysterious All-Spark that is the source of life for all Transformers, it then jumps directly into a really exciting scene in Qatar with a US Army Base under attack. We get to see our first Transformer action here, and it is as stunning as it is fleeting. When the scene is over, you are definitely left wanting more. This feeling is carried throughout the film.

The film changes gears a bit at this point as we are introduced to Sam (the hero) and his family and friends as well as how his character hooked up with Mikela (the heroine).

Once the set up is done, the film kicks into full gear and the last 45 min - 1 hour are nonstop. Every time I thought that we were about to hit a plateau in the action, the plot is cranked up another notch. If I had any complaint here, it's only that some of it goes by so fast that I found myself missing some of it while having to catch my breath. But there is never any time because the next big scene is already starting.

The effects are spectacular. The Robots look great on screen and have a very fluid movement. However, there were a few shots/scenes that were overly stylized. In addition to being quick, many of the elaborate battle sequences ended a bit too abruptly.

The Decepticons (evil robots) were for the most part treated as cannon fodder, and I was a little disappointed in the way that the villains each met their end.

In conclusion, this is easily the best Action film released this year. And possibly the best Action Blockbuster of the last few years. If you go into this looking for a Thrill Ride, you won't be disappointed. There is plenty of comedy and even some nice tender moments. The end of the film leaves you wanting more, and more than a little exhausted. Like spending the day at a roller coaster park.

And I am looking forward to riding the coaster again.

"Welcome To Singapore". I think that was the only part of the show that got my attention... other than that, i thought the show was quite a letdown...

At World's End continues from where Dead Man's Chest left off where the crew goes off to Davy Jones' Locker to rescue Jack Sparrow... And so the story drags on for the next hour or so... even the climactic battle in a maelstrom was not as spectacular as i thought it could have been...

Oh for those that left just after the credits rolled, you might want to stay behind for a 'Ten Year Later' scene... apparently i missed it.

ReviewReviewReviewReviewShortbus : Unrated [DVD]May 2, '07 7:09 AM
for everyone
Category:Movies
Genre: Independent
SHORTBUS is an indie movie that interweaves three separate tales of highly sexed and sexually frustrated New Yorkers, all of whom find some kind of salvation at an underground club named Shortbus. Anything goes at Shortbus--wild orgies between people from different ages, backgrounds, and sexual preferences are treated as commonplace, and most of the sex scenes shot through Mitchell's voyeuristic lens are completely unsimulated. The director (JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL) allows little time for his audience to pause for breath, opening SHORTBUS with a frantic collage of copulation and carnality that features most of his central characters. These include Sofia, a sex therapist who has never reached full orgasm; gay couple James --who begins the movie by fellating himself--and Jamie; and Severin, a dominatrix who finds herself unable to find true love.

The director lets his cast of characters unravel their tales of woe, interspersing the touching and mostly sad stories with eye-popping scenes from Shortbus and swooping birds-eye shots of a computer simulated version of New York City. But it's the sex scenes that will really get tongues wagging, and its testament to Mitchell's fearless and uncompromising vision that he depicts sexual acts that run the full coital gamut, from amusing to titillating to shocking. Amid all the boundary-pushing there is a tender heart buried in SHORTBUS's central narrative--which revolves around the search for identity and acceptance--but less sensitive viewers who seek amusement in the singing of the National Anthem into a prominent orifice will also find plenty to enjoy here.

Some might find the movie too 'pornographic'... but this movie is actually quite the tear-jerker... I would recommend it... and please watch it with the curtains drawn (so that the neighbours don't call the police) and the volume turned down (too much moaning and groaning! haha)

It was a tussle between SUNSHINE and this one... but in the end, i decided to go for a movie that doesn't need me to think so much...

The movie started off quite slowly.... it's almost like you know what's gonna happen (since the movie was based on The 10 biblical plagues).... but then, the sudden plot twist towards the end was really COOL!!!! You would never have expected it. I didn't.

On the whole, i really enjoyed it!!

Anyway, the story goes like this:
"Since her family was tragically killed, Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank) has battled against religious faith, including her own. The former Christian missionary has become a university professor and a world-renowned expert at refuting religious phenomena. When Doug (David Morrissey) approaches her to investigate events at a small Louisiana town that appears to have been struck by the ten Biblical plagues, she accepts the challenge. With everyone in the town pointing to a little girl named Loren (AnnaSophia Robb) as the source of the dark forces that threaten the community, Katherine’s investigation turns even more bizarre. As she begins to have difficulty explaining the occurrences with scientific evidence, she realizes that she may have to look deeper within herself and reclaim her faith if she is ever to understand the omens that surround her."

Dubbed as "Crash 2", Babel is almost similar in concept as the academy award winning movie from last year, only this time round, it has gone GLOBAL, LONG and err.. BORING...

This film follows four interconnected stories – an American couple vacationing in Morocco, a poor Moroccan family, a young deaf girl growing up in Japan, and a middle-aged Mexican woman living illegally in the United States. We get to see how these stories affect each other in otherwise inconspicuous ways and watch each person as they experience various forms of predjudice. Babel stars Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, and Gael Garcia Bernal. Although this film says a lot about the current sociopolitical climate inherent in our world today, it does little else but flimsily connect four desolate situations.

It started off quite dry... and then it got a wee bit interesting.... and when the credit rolls... i can't help by exclaim "huh? that's the end??"

Babel is up for an oscar tommorrow. I really don't know if it's chances of winning is high... but then again.... looked what happened LAST YEAR.

Genre: Romance
the DVD for the show is out even when it's still showing at the cinemas here...

The story goes like, "When word of the famed Eisenheim's (my favourite actor, Edward Norton) illusions reaches Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell), the ruler attends one of the magician's shows in order to debunk the performance. But when the prince's intended, Sophie von Teschen (Jessica Biel), assists the magician onstage, Eisenheim and Sophie recognize each other from their childhoods, and pretty soon they're totally hot for each other. As the clandestine romance continues, the prince's best cop (Paul Giamatti) is charged with exposing Eisenheim, even while the magician gains a devoted and vocal public following. Before long, Sophie turns up dead, and the logical suspect is Eisenheim himself."

It's a nice romance-turned-mystery-how-did-he-do-it type of movie... although the movie started off quite slowly, it managed to pick up the pace almost 15 minutes in...

watch it!

On Saturday 11 November, Kylie resumed the sellout Showgirl Tour; her opening words, as she rose from below the stage on a platform dressed in a pink feathered head-dress and flowing gown by John Galliano, were "Good evening Sydney!". For 30 seconds in between her ascension and the beginning of the first song, Better The Devil You Know, Kylie absorbed an explosive standing ovation from a tearful audience.

For almost two and a half hours Kylie dazzled the audience with a collection of songs from some of her biggest disco hits, through to some of her lesser known favourites.

And now we can 'experience' it on a 2-CD audio recording from second show on 12 November in Sydney...

It has also been confirmed that the second Melbourne show (11 December 2006) will be filmed for a TV special and DVD release.

I missed her concert last year... and she's not coming to Asia for now... i guess i'll have to wait for the DVD then... :D So for now, it just 'audio pleasure'...

You don't usually associate a string orchestra with THE pet shop boys. I mean, PSB are literally the 'founders' of electro-pop... so the first time i heard Concrete, i went like 'WOW'...

'Concrete' is actually the PSB's first live concert recording. It comes in 2CDs (17 tracks), which featured familiar classics like 'It's A Sin', 'West End Girls', to the more recent recordings from their album 'Fundamental'. The album also featured special guests like Robbie Williams and Rufus Wainwright.

The duo is accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra. My favourite tracks on the album are "Left To My Own Devices", "Jealousy" (which featured RW on vocals), "The Sodom And Gomorrah Show" and "Numb".

A definite MUST-LISTEN for fans of PSB.

Twelve year-old D.J. Walters has been monitoring the unexplainable activities of the house across the street since he was a kid. He knows something just isn't right. Owned by the mysterious and reclusive Mr. Nebbercracker, the house has a way of making things disappear. Seems anything that lands on the old man's lawn is considered as good as gone.

Determined to find out the secret to this ravenous piece of real estate, DJ and his friends Chowder and Jenny concoct a plan to battle the ominous "Monster House", only to discover that it's not just things that are starting to vanish, but apparently, it's people too! Halloween, with its hordes of 'trick-or-treaters', is quickly approaching, and the three friends realize there is only one choice - to go into the house and destroy it once and for all!

The show should carry a PG-13 rating rather than a PG rating... cos it has got its fair share of scary moments... but on the whole, it's a very entertaining movie to watch...the characters are simply adorable... from the little girl on the tricycle (sweet!!)... to the 3 leads... "A successful Chicago structural engineer Michael Scofield enters a bank and fires a handgun into the air. Within moments he's arrested, then tried, convicted, and sentenced to five years at Fox River State Penitentiary. The prisoner simply grins, though, because this is just the beginning of his elaborate plan. His brother, Lincoln Burrows, has been caught up in a government conspiracy and sits on death row at Fox River for a murder he did not commit. While the brothers' lawyers, Veronica and Nick Savrinn, fight to expose the conspiracy, Michael takes it upon himself to break his brother out, using blueprints of the prison that have been concealed in the design of his amazing upper-body tattoo. Using both the blueprint and his previous research into the backgrounds of various inmates, Michael enlists the aid of his cellmate, Sucre; the old con Westmoreland, who just might be infamous robber D. B. Cooper; the Italian mobster Abruzzi; an Iraq veteran, C-Note; a prison snitch, Tweener; a mental patient, Haywire; and an unrepentant child killer, T-Bag, who worms his way into the crew. Michael isn't above manipulating prison staff, either: He works his charms on prison doctor Sara Tancredi -- who also happens to be the daughter of the governor -- and even becomes friendly with Warden Henry Pope, just to get access to his office."

The show replaces ALIAS as my favourite TV series... it's definitely a MUST MUST MUST MUST see... now i have to wait for 2007 for Season 2 to be released on DVD... ARRRRGGGGHHH!!!!

"It's the wedding anniversary of rugged Cleveland police detective "Big Bob" Carter and his chatty wife Ethel and to celebrate, Bob has asked his extended family to cruise to California with them, hoping the joys of the open road might help fuse their frayed connections. No one is particularly happy about it. Eldest daughter, Lynn, worries about her new baby's safety and comfort while her husband, mild-mannered tech geek, Doug, worries about close encounters with his father-in-law. Meanwhile teen daughter, Brenda, detests the idea of leaving her friends for a family bonding trip, while young prankster Bobby is anxious to entertain the family's two German Shepherds, Beauty and Beast. Nevertheless, the entire clan piles into a weathered Suburban pulling Bob's beloved '88 Airstream trailer and heads west. Then, Big Bob takes a detour. Suddenly, the Carter family finds themselves in a desolate stretch of desert, with nothing seemingly alive for miles. When they run into a little unexpected vehicle trouble, they realize they are in dire straits, far from help, with a relentlessly sweltering desert sun overhead. But even as they fight to survive the deadly desert, a far greater threat emerges. Now the Carters become aware that they are not quite as alone as they first thought. There is another group of survivors in the hills surrounding the desert: a genetically mutated, insatiably hungry, blood-thirsty clan--the terrifying offspring of miners left behind in the days when atomic tests spread radioactive fallout across the desert--who will stop at nothing to prey on the Carters one by one. Facing the very depths of savagery, the Carter family must pull together if they are to find any hope of returning to civilized life again--alive."

ReviewReviewReviewReviewReviewFrank Miller's Sin City [DVD]Jul 22, '06 10:22 AM
for everyone
Category:Movies
Genre: Cult
The highly stylized graphic novels of talented comic-book artist Frank Miller come to life in an equally stylized motion picture co-directed by Miller and Robert Rodriguez. Starkly photographed in black-and-white (with strategically placed daubs of color), Sin City resembles its printed-page inspiration more closely than perhaps any previous comic-book adaptation. Rodriguez and Miller take great pains to replicate specific panels from the graphic novels, casting actors who resemble the pen-and-ink characters, posing them in the same positions, and employing the same dramatic interplay of light and shadow created by Miller’s bold brushwork.

Bruce Willis plays a rugged, honest cop -- one of the few working in Sin City -- who rescues a little girl from a sadistic rapist (Nick Stahl) whose big brother (Rutger Hauer) happens to be a politically well-connected clergyman. Framed into prison, the cop languishes for years, and the girl grows up to be a stripper (Jessica Alba) working in a nightclub frequented by a hulking ex-con (an unrecognizable Mickey Rourke) wanted for murder.

Meanwhile, a corrupt detective (Benicio Del Toro) who is harassing one of the club’s waitresses (Brittany Murphy) is eventually killed by her boyfriend (Clive Owen). The resulting chaos ignites a war between Sin City’s armed prostitutes (led by Rosario Dawson) and dishonest cops infuriated by the murder of their crooked comrade.

The movie’s two-dimensional underpinnings are reinforced by the comic-strip nature of its violence: people sustain multiple gunshot wounds without dying, plunge from great heights without injury, and soar dozens of feet through the air after being hit by speeding cars. There’s nothing even remotely realistic about Sin City, but its atmospherics are so convincing that viewers will believe they’re always right in the middle of this violent, grotesque, fully realized world.

My take? It's a wonderful movie, with enough sex, gore and violence to satisfy the hungriest of appetites... I'm gonna watch this again!
